The Hall of Riggings
We have already established that boats are adapted to their navigation function and built with local know-how and available materials. Sails are another way of ascertaining the origins of boats. In the Mediterranean we find pointed sails, lateen sails. Around the Atlantic, crews, who are familiar with the tides, prefer fore and aft sails. This diversity on water corresponds to the variety of naval shipyards on land. While still working with traditional methods, they are becoming more specialised, relying on specific scientific knowledge.
