Engine and wheelhouse
You have entered the area dedicated to the arrival of the engine; first steam and then petrol. The engine changed the design of the boat. It now required a control centre; the wheelhouse or gangway. In 1923, a bit over 1000 motor boats were listed in France, of which only 4 could be found in Brittany. By the 1930s, the initial resistance to the engine ebbed away and now fishermen were convinced that the engine allowed for a faster and more efficient pull. In 1940 the motorisation of the fleet was complete. The life of fishermen changed radically.
