Navigation by bell-towers

Texte ou transcription

The title “navigation by bell-towers”, indicates coastal and river navigation, guided by bell-towers of towns and villages. It relates to cabotage – the transport of goods by waterway. From cape to cape, from one region to another, the coaster was the “lorry of the sea”. In its storage holds it transported construction materials, grain, firewood, wine, salt and with the industrialisation: fertilizer, cement, coal and mine posts... A small place for anchorage is enough – that is why they are called “crab crushers”. They are built in big, specialised shipyards.
