Shelter on the Humanity, canoe with foresail

Texte ou transcription

On boards of the boats, in a creek or in a neighbouring port, while waiting to lift the nets, men tried to shelter from the wind, cold and bad weather. This makeshift shelter, a type of cabin on board, is called “cabanage”. Stretched over the wood, the sails form a tent. The slight forward sloping ensures drainage of rainwater and protects against the draft. It allows for sleeping and eating in shelter.

Humanity, canoe with foresail This type of vessel is called “canoe with foresail” and is used for fishing. The Humanity was built by the Le Gall shipyard in Pont-L’ Abbé in 1936. It has only one sail at the front; the foresail. This boat belongs to the family of small luggers replacing the larger luggers that were too costly in terms of labour during the serious sardine crises in the late 19th and the early 20th century. Smaller and less crew-intensive, the canoe with foresail is the fishing boat on the eve of the Second World War.
