Shelter harbours
Here we have reconstructed a ‘shelter harbour’, typical for the Cap Sizun in the 1920s. A natural shelter, often found in the depths of ill-protected crevices, is equipped with jetties or steeply sloping slipways. When this protection becomes insufficient, the boats are put out of the reach of the sea: The fisherman on the right pushes his canoe onto the inclined slipway. He is helped by a man who operates the winch handle. Operated by a crank, it allows the canoe to be hoisted using a chain wound around a drum. Fishing for shellfish was fruitful in these rocky areas.
