The fishing lugger

The fishing lugger is 10 meters long, simple and efficient, easy to steer with two sails and made for fishing along the coast for a maximum of a few days. The long and heavy oars help to keep the boat facing the wind while fishing and to move forward when the wind is gone. Usually, the crew consists of the captain, 3 sailors and the apprentice, who was around 12 years old. Towards 1900, the shipyards of Douarnenez, here on the Port Rhu, manufactured 140 boats per year. Luggers are identical, made with the same template or pattern.
