L’abri du marin

« L’abri du marin » of Douarnenez, created by the architect René Darde, opened its doors in 1914. This charity, with its 12 shelters, was founded by Jacques de Thézac. He was moved by the misery affecting both the body and the mind of many sailors (illiteracy, alcoholism, tuberculosis...). Helped by his personal wealth, he decided to improve their conditions of life. The shelters acted as havens of peace and schools for sailors. They closed in the 1980s.
